As an escalating talent crunch merges with historically low levels of corporate loyalty and boomers are being replaced by younger workers with different expectations about the role of work in their lives, employers must be more strategic than ever before in their efforts to attract and retain employees. Younger workers today also tend to pick a city in which to live and then find a job. Furthermore, research reveals a strong relationship between dynamic cities, companies with progressive people practices, and a company's profitability. The results of one study shows that companies using the most progressive HR policies had:
  • 50 percent less turnover,
  • 3.5 times greater sales per employee, and
  • More than three times greater market value to book value of its shares.

The primary result of the work/life survey is a statistical model based on 44 attributes that determine the workplace attributes most important to employees and gauges employee satisfaction on these same workplace attributes.
